Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
Key Term for the study of this book: bour·geoi·sie--in its most commonly used definition means the middle class, typically with reference to its perceived materialistic values or conventional attitudes. But in Communist/Marxist context, it's the capitalist class who own most of society's wealth and means of production.
View: The Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 70s.
The book is autobiographical, as the author Dai Sijie himself was "re-educated" and sent to the mountains during the Cultural Revolution. His story begins in 1971 and lasts about 2 years.
