Education in the Time of Covid: The good news is that most but certainly not all young people who become infected will not become seriously ill. Some infected students won't even know they are ill. Yet this is why the situation is so serious: each of us could potentially pass the virus on to others without even knowing it. Unfortunately, certain individuals are at higher risk to become seriously ill, including me and some of your other instructors, coaches, office staff and other school employees. Your family members who are undergoing treatment for cancer, elderly grandparents, or individuals with diabetes, heart disease, and other medical conditions are also in the high risk category. So, too, are some of you who have compromised immune systems or chronic illnesses or health issues. In order to protect all of us, classroom protocols will look very different this year. In addition to asthma, I was born without 1 of 5 lung lobes and have numerous nodules in my lungs, all conditions that put me at high risk for serious illness. Therefore, any policy or practice utilized in my classroom is meant to protect my health and yours. The CDC and South Dakota Medical Association urge all citizens over 2 to wear masks in public and stress the importance of 6 ft. of social distance.
