Full-length ACT Reflection
In a Google Doc that you share with Karin Renner and Janel Merkwan, write a ONE-PAGE double-spaced reflection that addresses these seven questions. Please put your name in the Document Title box in upper left and then number each question.  We would suggest one short paragraph for each question.  Do NOT answer Yes or No anywhere in your paragraphs.  Write complete sentences!  Paragraphs are never less than 3 sentences; shoot for 4-6 sentences for each response.

Growth occurs though REFLECTION!!

1. List and label your 4 subtest scaled scores and your composite score.
English=(need 18 to avoid remedial)
Math=(need 20 to avoid remedial)
Reading=
Science=
Composite=

2. Did you finish all of the sections in the allotted time? If not which ones did you not finish and how many questions did you have left? On questions that you weren't able to get to because you ran out of time, did you fill in an answer choice anyway?

3. How did the test meet your expectations?  Was it easier than you thought? Which section was easiest for you? Which was most difficult?  In other words, were you prepared?

4. Now that you have taken the test, what would you do differently if you were to take the test again? Address both before the test and during the test. AND, what will you do to keep up your skills in English and Reading as you shift to Math and Science?

5. What strategy did you utilize for reading? Did you take the test in order?

6. How did you feel physically taking the whole test? Did you get tired? Hungry? What would you do differently or what advice would you provide others who will be taking the test about preparing physically?

7.  This is for Mrs. Merkwan. Reflect on your performance in MATH. What kinds of questions were you most confident about? What concepts do you need to practice? What were the questions you had no idea how to answer.

8.  Tell us your plans for the Saturday, December 14th test.
Are you paying to take the real test?
If yes, have you COMPLETED your registration? Have you added your photo?
or Are you planning to take another practice test with us that day?
or Do you have a school activity that day that will prevent you from taking a full-length real or practice test that day?

Week of October 21-25

Finish last Reading video
The Best 3-Step Strategy for the ACT Reading Test(5:07)
Reading Practice Set #1
Take the Reading Practice Test on pg. 368 ONE PASSAGE AT A TIME,
recording the time it takes you to read and answer all questions for each.
Finish TWO passages today.
Check your answers on pg. 756 OR 625 then get EXPLANATIONS on pg. 447.
Record times and scores on THIS SHEET
Remember, our goal is 8 to 8 1/2 minutes per passage, but you might START at 10 or 11 minutes!
Time-saving READING TIP: Circle answers in book, then transfer all 10 to bubble sheet
The more we PRACTICE, the faster you'll get and the more you'll figure out what the BEST order to do the passages is for YOU.
Use Online Stopwatch.
START with Natural Science
Do Soc Science or Prose 2nd
SAVE Humanities for last
**Remember to read the short INTRO to each passage!

If you don't finish 2 in class, get the 2nd done BEFORE tomorrow!

Tuesday 10/22
Today you'll review Reading Improvement Strategies for the #1 problem

Wednesday 10/23
Finish the two reading passages you didn't read on Monday.
Check your answers on pg. 756 OR 625 then get EXPLANATIONS on pg. 447.
In addition to the score and time, decide and RECORD which STRATEGY you will use/used from the 8 videos and 2 keynotes about reading strategies that you have reviewed.
**SILENCE until everyone is done!!! At real ACT, you can't talk or move until time is called!
**Even though you probably did not finish in 35 minutes, figure out what your SCALED score would be using chart on pg. 758 or 627. Use the READING Column!
Total up your time. How long did whole Reading test take you. Record that time!

Thursday 10/24
Practice Reading Test
Decide what order you'll read passages in .
Mrs. Renner will set 8:45 timer. At 8:45 we'll stop for a few seconds. If you finish a passage before 8:45 is up, go on to the next!
Time, score,  Record results on little sheet
Before you start, WRITE DOWN the strategy you will use on that passage on your score sheet:
1. Following line with finger
2.  Reading blurb, first parag, last parag then topic sentences
3.  Reading blurb then all topic sentences
4.  Pre-reading the questions
Use 8:45 timer.

Friday 10/25
Figure out your Reading Scale Score for test yesterday:
My Raw score X 36=__________ /40=________ + 2 (correction                                                                         factor)

Instructions:  Put your name on little sheet. Staple 2 little sheets together.
  1. On the 1/3 sheet, put a box around Scale Score and label it.
  2. Under the Record My Strategy section, after test yesterday you should have written a sentence or 2 about timing.
  3. Did you finish?
  4. Which section did you save for last?
  5. Did you do test our of order?
  6. What is your strategy the NEXT time we do this?
  7. Look at your 2 little sheets. Do you notice any pattern? For example, are you doing the best on one type of passage? The worst on one type of passage?
Next, for your BEST score and WORST score, look at the answer explanations. UNDERSTAND the answer explanations! Look back at the passage!
Now turn in your 2 little score sheets. Return the answer explanations.

Spend time reviewing Strategies for Improving Reading in Big Red book pp. 257 to 277.

That full-length test is a requirement for the course.  You need to let us know NOW if you can't be there that day. So far the only excused absences we have ever allowed that day were for gymnasts competing that Saturday. We'll send a note to all of your parents to let them know that as well.

Thursday 10/17
Take English Post-Test
45 minutes to answer 75 questions
Remember that there are  5 passages on this test.  DON'T spend more than 30 seconds per question. The most you should spend on each passage is 8:30

Friday 10/18
Intro to Reading Subtest

The reading test is divided into four parts and is the third test on test day.
Students get tired and start slowing down.
We need to learn strategies to combat that test fatigue!
You have 35 minutes to answer 40 questions on 4 passages.
That means approximately 8:30 to 8:45  per passage.

The number ONE reason students do not perform as well on the ACT  Reading subtest is that they do not finish the test.
The test is designed so that most students only read three of the four passages. We want to read all four and get a higher score!

The ACT test must be consistent from test date to test date.
The stories change but the wording of the questions does not.
We can study those patterns which help students to get through the test faster and get more answers correct.

Another comma error tested on the ACT is Comma Splices.  What is a comma splice?  A comma splice occurs when a writer uses a comma between two sentences where there should be something stronger, like a period or semicolon.  Comma splices can also be corrected by using a FANBOYS construction or by subordinating one of the two independent clauses.

Comma Splice:  It's important to study for the ACT, it's the only way to do well.
Corrected with semicolon:
It's important to study for the ACT
; it's the only way to do well.
Corrected with period:

3. Read the first sentence of each paragraph and skim the questions BEFORE reading the passage.
4. Once you figure out which passage is your best (Prose, Social Science, Humanities, Natural Science), START with that passage.

Write name on test.

Wednesday 1/16: Day 1  Reading Practice:

4. Take ACT Comma Usage quiz at Quia

Corrected with semicolon:          It's important to study for the ACT; it's the only way to do well.
Corrected with period:                 It's important to study for the ACT. It's the only way to do well.
Corrected with subordination:   Because it's the only way to do well, it's important to study for the ACT.
