.Honors English Summer Homework:
August 2020 Welcome back to what will likely be another unusual academic year! I just learned (on 8/6) from our network engineer Chris that Weebly (where my website is housed) was on a LONG list of sites that our new content filter was blocking. The situation has been remedied, so I am finally able to share more information with you! You should have picked up The Crucible in May. Here are your step-by-step instructions for the TWO summer activities: Note: All active links on my website are underlined and CAPITALIZED! Note: Use CHROME, ALWAYS! ALWAYS and CONTINUOUSLY refresh my website because I update daily and sometimes hourly, based on how far we get in class! I am constantly updating, and I don't want you to be working from an older cached page. A. Read The Crucible. Be prepared for discussion and other activities upon return. While reading: 1. Did you know that The Crucible, a story based on the Salem Witchcraft Trials, was written in January 1953 to parallel a historic event in the 1950s, when another "witch hunt" led by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee was accusing innocent Americans of being Communist! 2. Use THIS GUIDE with discussion questions and answers. I would suggest reading each Act, then going through the questions & answers for that Act. Note the arrow that advances you to the next 10 questions in the lower right corner. After reading: 1. Put on your headphones, FOCUS, and Listen carefully to THIS PODCAST with summary and analysis and today's relevance of The Crucible. 2. Click through each link at THIS SITE 3. Read THIS REVIEW of a theatrical production. Why is The Crucible still relevant today? 4.View these VIDEO SPARKNOTES after reading 5. View: Crucible ala Schmoop Upon return: We will review primary documents and View "Cry Innocent" segments. B. Complete a Diagnostic Grammar Quiz at Quia. Follow instructions below. The quiz will assess your understanding of MUG (mechanics, usage, grammar) topics we'll study this year. Do NOT stress over this. It's just to let me know what topics we need to focus on this year! For the past 8 years or so, I have used Quia as my home base for the hundreds and hundreds of assessments that I have written. My students have used Quia for all assessments, surveys, review, etc. As educators started to move toward Google Classroom a couple of years ago, I saught input from the tech folks at both Quia and Google. Other than re-typing every assessment I have created, there is no way to transfer all of my work in Quia to Google Classroom. It would take me literally years to recreate everything in Google Classroom. So we'll stick with Quia for assessments but will use Google Classroom for other assignments. More on that later. To take the Diagnostic Quiz, you need to join our class on Quia! Follow these steps: Class:Honors English Class of 2022 Code:JDKDX369 Step 1. Go to the Quia website at https://www.quia.com/web. Step 2. Now, click the area labeled Students. When the next page appears, enter your username and password if you already have a Quia account. If you do not have an account, click the link Create my free account. Fill out the form that appears. Select "Student" as the account type. When you are done, press the Create my account button. Step 3. You should now be in the Student Zone. Type in the class code JDKDX369 in the text field and press the Add class button. Now you're done! Now that you have registered for your instructor's course, you can view your class web page, take quizzes, view your quiz results, view time spent on Quia activities, and read your instructor's feedback from your Quia account. Follow these steps to view your results: Step 1. Log in to your account. (Remember, go to the Quia Web home page at https://www.quia.com/web and click the area labeled Students.) Step 2. Click on the class name. I'll turn the diagnostic activity on now. Please complete by August 18th so I have the opportunity to look at them before school. If you have any problems, email me! Before you begin quiz, read the instructions at the top VERY CAREFULLY! Click to access Diagnostic Grammar Quiz at Quia Reminder: You will ALWAYS access assignments at Quia from my website. **Just an FYI. The Crucible 2. Our Town 3. The Glass Menagerie Now Click each title below to access the test. ** Be sure to read the introductory material I have provided at the start of each test ON the test! The Crucible Our Town The Glass Menagerie Assignment #2--preparation for 4 Quia activities will take 45 min to an hour! Mechanics Usage Grammar (MUG) Assignment: Before taking the grammar quizzes, work through all of the practice activities. This should take 45 minutes to an hour. MUG (Mechanics, Usage, Grammar): Our study of MUG this year will be tailored SPECIFICALLY to prepare you for the four big standardized tests you'll take (PSAT, ASVAB, ACT, Common Core). The following info comes from an official ACT test prep site: "In order to do well on the ACT and PSAT English Tests, you need to know the basic rules of grammar. Specifically, you need to know the rules of grammar most often tested by the ACT. These Usage/Mechanics topics are: Punctuation Basic Grammar and Usage Sentence Structure "The ACT English Test requires that you know the rules for the following types of punctuation: Commas Apostrophes Semicolons Colons Parentheses and Dashes Periods, Question Marks, and Exclamation Points Not all of these punctuation types are tested on every ACT English Test. However, you can definitely expect to find questions dealing with the first four items of the list on the English Test you take. July's MUG Focus: Apostrophes: Apostrophes are the second most commonly tested punctuation mark on the English Test. Apostrophes primarily indicate possession, but they also take the place of omitted letters in contractions (for example, “was not” becomes “wasn’t” and “it is” becomes “it’s”). You will be tested chiefly on your knowledge of the apostrophe’s possessive function. **Hover over each activity and click to open the link Why do we have to study apostrophes?? Can you spot the errors on these real signs and ads?! Click to see Apostrophe Abuse- AND Apostrophe Catastrophes-keep scrolling down the page to see all the photos! 1. View the Apostrophe PowerPoint (keep clicking to advance it) and Apostrophe Cheat Sheet (click on the first two images under image results!) 2. I don't record these scores--only the ones from Quia! 4. Try There/Their/They're 5. One More Apostrophe Quiz You WILL see the answers to these first two practice assignments as you take them. I always include an explanation of the rule so that if you miss it, you understand why! These two assignments will turn on Thursday night at midnight and shut off Monday night at midnight. 6. Now Click to complete first practice assignment at Quia--use the rules on the cheat sheet or link #2 above! 7. Then Click to complete the second assignment at Quia: **Both of these assignments are worth 14 points. During the school year, I often give two assignments or quizzes with the same point value and then record the better of the two. I left the answers turned on for these two so you can see what mistakes you might be making. *Remember: The plurals for numbers used as nouns are not formed with apostrophes! Example: I am a fan of the 1960s. He grew up in the '80s. 8. Play Beat the Clock 9. Play Who Owns What 10. Click for Catastrophes of Apostrophes--read the red instructions! 11. Look at this Apostrophe Reminder! For the two quizzes below, keep open the Review Apostrophe Rules site and Apostrophe Cheat Sheet if you need them. **Both of these quizzes are worth 16 points.
