Thursday 5/2 **June ACT registration is due by THIS Friday, May 3! Read "The War on the Evening News" article and complete quiz. Why do we study history? If we don't, we are condemned to repeat the mistakes of our past. Vietnam proved to be an unwinnable war. The US is engaged in what is another unwinnable war in Afghanistan and will be pulling all combat troops out of that country within the year. Did you know that the US has been fighting in Afghanistan for 17 years?!! The war followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in an effort to dismantle al-Qaeda and eliminate its safe haven by removing the Taliban from power. "The War on the Evening News" told about the first war in the media. Look how far we have come since then. We can't underestimate the impact Walter Cronkite had on how America viewed the war in Vietnam. Learn a little more about this American icon who anchored the CBS Evening News for more than 30 years, thus bringing Americans news of JFK and RFK's and Martin Luther King's death, the first landing on the moon, the Civil Rights movement, Watergate and the impeachment of Richard Nixon. View: Walter Cronkite's First CBS Evening Newscast in 1963. JFK was interviewed on this first broadcast and was assassinated just a couple of months after this broadcast. Part of the video highlights a trip that the then American Ambassador took to Saigon, Vietnam. Remember, this was before America's boots-on-the-ground involvement in Vietnam. Just two years later, Cronkite himself visited Vietnam as CBS chief war correspondent. His criticism helped change public opinion.
