Previous Weeks' Lessons Week of April 6-April 9, 2021 Tuesday 4/6 Load Smarter Balance Testing Browser Follow steps in Mr. Waltner's email: All Juniors will need to go out to Self Service and under Browsers run the install for SDSecureBrowser 12.5. When the install completes, have them reboot and then try to open the browser. For the majority of the Juniors it should come up to the logon without error. For what I pushed out last week, I'm showing 98 completed devices and 17 pending. These are the settings that we previously have manually set in System Preferences. Without them, when going into the browser, you should get errors that will prevent you from getting to the login. I'm counting on the reboot of the computer to trigger the last 17 pending installs. If for some reason a browser has errors. You can have them go into Self Service and under browsers install Common Assessment Application Settings 2020-21. This is the same file that I tried to push to all devices in the Class of 2022. If this doesn't show up, then either Tricia or I needs to add their device to the Class of 2022. Previous Year's Lessons Friday 4/27 Paper should be COMPLETED and ready for editing! Final paper due on Tuesday. Be sure you have a self/peer edit checklist. Be sure you upload paper to Turnitin MORE than once, first when it's done and then after it's been self and peer edited. See checklist BELOW on Wednesday ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ We'll postpone novel intro until Tuesday: You will have two novels to choose from: Click to learn about Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers or Click to learn about The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien **Juniors have always chosen about 1/2 and 1/2. I believe former students would tell you these are their very favorite books! They are about identical in length and are written at the same reading level. They are equally as powerful and gripping. They both come with 8 quizzes at Quia. We will read and quiz during the next 3 weeks. Quizzes can be taken only during class time. You'll HAVE to read outside of class to finish the novels. Your laptops will be shut off, except for when you are ready to quiz. Please respect each other's precious reading time during class. Previous Days' Lessons Wednesday 4/25 Click here for TIPS on writing document View: Cite: When/Why View: Quoting, Paraphrasing and Summarizing (VERY sparingly!) I think we watched this video in 1st semester!! It's a great reminder of how to Quote, Paraphrase or Summarize to avoid Plagiarism! --One common error I'm seeing on Works Cited pages is that ProQuest and EBSCO sources are missing pieces of info that show up ONLY if you export correctly out of those two databases. ALL of your ProQuest or EBSCO sources will have volume and page #s listed WITHIN the citation AND siouxlandlib will be in the address if done correctly. If they are missing that info, you either did not convert the citation to MLA before exporting OR you just Googled for the article later in your research and used the web citation. It MUST be done correctly! We will demonstrate one more time, especially with ProQuest. EBSCO Example: **Note volume, no, pp, EBSCOhost, and siouxland lib in citation! Those items MUST be there! Johnson, E. Michael. “Making a Dent.” Golf World, vol. 58, no. 15, Oct. 2004, pp. 12-14. EBSCO MegaFILE, EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com.siouxlandlib.idm.oclc.org/login.aspx?direct=true&db=keh&AN=14978727&site=ehost-live. Accessed 12 Apr. 2017. (this one MIGHT just have a doi #) ProQuest Example: **Note: if you did these correctly, siouxlandlib always shows up in the citation! Kim, Jooha, et al. “Inverse Magnus Effect on a Rotating Sphere: When and Why.” Journal of Fluid Mechanics, vol. 754, 10 Sept. 2014, p. 11.Research Library, doi:http://dx.doi.org.siouxlandlib.idm.oclc.org/10.1017/jfm.2014.428. Accessed 24 Apr. 2018. **Hint: the step many missed was hitting the CITE button on the right, choosing MLA and then hitting the CHANGE button! Then you'd hit SAVE to EasyBib. Continue to self and peer edit. More copies on back counter. Have Remainder of paper written for Friday! Final paper due Tuesday. Work on remainder of paper using this list: ✔️ Work in all 5 print sources and your expert ✔️ Include infographic IN A LOCATION where it supports the text. You can/should also refer to it as necessary in the What I Learned section ✔️ Did you add your infographic to EasyBib under Digital Image? ✔️ Add 3 Images that relate closely to what you learned about your topic. (Remember the Asthma paper?) ✔️ Include in-text citations and quotation sandwiches. Remember that your in-text citations will be whatever the FIRST element of each of your Works Cited entries is. (Author's Last Name) page number if available in the WC entry ("Title of Article"). If no author (Last Name of Expert). ✔️ Did you add Expert Interview to your EasyBib? ✔️ If you have 7 sources on your Works Cited list, make sure there are 7 sources cited in paper! Your infographic would be an extra one that does NOT show up in parentheses. ✔️ Finish and share the What I Learned Section with a peer editor ✔️ Upload to Turnitin AFTER you have What I Learned section written! Now would be a great time to run it through to catch MUG errors and check for originality! For next year, papers must be 90% original or will have to be rewritten! Shoot for a percentage no higher than 10-15% in your originality report! Note: As long as the Assignment Settings allow, you can re-submit as many times as you like to Turnitin, up until the assignment due date. Re-submitting an assignment is handled in an identical manner as a first time submission to an assignment with re-submissions completely overwriting the previous submission. Be aware that it takes 24 hours for the Originality report to be produced for subsequent submissions. Note: Papers can only be re-submitted until the assignment due date. If the setting, ‘allow late submissions after the due date’ is turned on, only students who have not yet submitted a paper will be able to submit. ✔️ Write the Reflection section! If in doubt, go back to previous homework pages and see the sample papers! ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ Monday 4/23 Distribute calendar, distribute Self/Peer Edit Checklist Did you have a peer edit your Story of My Search section using the checklist below?
